In the 1940's Stuart and Abigail Kime decided to stake their futures on the fantastic views afforded from the crest of Big Walker Mountain. Friends of theirs had built a climbing tower on Mount Gaylor in Winslow Arkansas and Stuart decided he would like to construct a similar tower.

Abigail recalls that "it was just after VJ Day when Stuart crossed over the mountain on US Highway 52 which was a good new highway and decided that this was the spot for his tower." Starting small and doing most of the work themselves, the Kimes created a nationally known tourist attraction on this high Blue Ridge summit. The tower is 100 feet tall and offers a view from the top that words simply cannot describe.

The Big Walker Lookout gift shop is a treasure trove of chestnut lumber. The beautifully crafted cabinets and trim work are all made from wormy chestnut.

Stuart Kime passed away in 1972 and Abigail operated the facility until she retired in 1992.

Today Big Walker Lookout is operated by Stuart and Abigail's son Ron and his wife Dee. They now feature crafts by local craftspeople and anyone looking for a great Interstate diversion or a cool summer breeze should visit this scenic mountaintop attraction.

Big Walker Mountain Lookout is located on the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway.
