A wonderful place to plan a family outing. There is something for everyone!
The New River goes through a series of shallow (1 to 3 feet) water falls over approximately a mile distance. There are boat ramps in two locations at Foster Falls, as well as rentals of bicycles, tubes, canoes, rubber rafts and kayaks at New River Adventures. They also sell a limited variety of snacks and soft drinks.
Fishing the New River is permitted with a Virginia fishing license.
Picnic tables are sprinkled generously on the beautiful shaded areas adjacent to the New River and there is a new campground. At present, the campground only includes a cement pad for tents, a grill, and lantern hanger, but by June of 1999, the Park Service hopes to have water to the sites. Campsites are by reservation only, by calling 1-800-933-PARK
There is parking for horse trailers for those who wish to ride the New River Trail. New in 1999 is rental horses for guided trail rides (Adults and children over 10). Trail rides are for one hour up to all day. They will also lead small children around a ring on a horse for a fee.
A new playground for small children was built in 1998.
Attractions at Foster Falls include an old iron furnace, a restored train depot with caboose, and several old buildings that have not yet been restored, such as the old hotel, and grist mill. An outdoor amphitheater is also at the park.
Two festivals are held annually at Foster Falls - the Wythe County Heritage Day held the third Saturday in September and the Foster Falls Railway Festival held in early September.
